From primary school to
secondary education and beyond
Children from about age 4 to 12 attend primary school. In years 1 and 2, learning through play is central; later years build further skills including reading and maths.
After primary school, pupils move on to secondary education. There are different routes, such as VMBO, HAVO and VWO. Young people who have recently arrived in the Netherlands may first need temporary education for non-Dutch speakers before moving on.
The main routes in one overview
The route that is suitable for a child always depends on age, development, language level and the school’s advice.

| Age / stage | Education route | For newcomers |
|---|---|---|
| 4–12 years | Primary school, years 1 to 8 | For young children, a primary school close to home may be suitable. For children aged 6–12 who do not yet speak Dutch, the newcomer class may be a temporary route. |
| 12–16/18 years | Secondary education: including VMBO, HAVO and VWO | For pupils who have recently arrived in the Netherlands, First Reception for Non-Dutch Speakers (EOA) classes are available. |
| From about age 16 | Further education, including MBO and later possibly HBO or university | For pupils aged 16 and over, Talland in Hoorn is one possible education route. |
Sometimes a different educational route is needed
Alongside mainstream primary and secondary education, there are routes for pupils who need additional support, including special primary education (SBO), special education (SO) and special secondary education (VSO).
The suitable school or route is not determined by age alone. The current school and the professionals involved consider what a pupil needs in order to learn, feel safe and continue developing.
School and parents need each other
Dutch education may be different from the education system in a family’s country of origin. It helps when the school clearly explains how meetings, school arrangements and a child’s development are discussed.
If you have questions about your child’s educational path, always discuss them with the school where your child is enrolled. The school can work with you to determine the logical next step and any support that may be needed.
